Last month, a group of insurance agents spent five days doing something most agents never make time for: actually working on their marketing instead of just in their business.

That was the Insurance Playground Challenge — a free, five-day live event hosted by Alex Branning designed to give agents a real marketing system they could put into action immediately.

Here’s what happened, what agents took away from each session, and how you can apply the same ideas to your business today.

Day 1: Stop Chasing Leads — Build a System That Fills Your Pipeline Year-Round

Most insurance agents are stuck on the assembly line: get a lead, work the lead, close the sale, start over. It works — until it doesn’t.

Alex Branning opened Day 1 by introducing the Insurance Playground framework: a sustainable marketing system built around attraction, retention, and referrals working together — not one at a time.

The core idea: instead of grinding for every new lead, build a system where leads come to you, clients stay with you, and happy clients bring new clients automatically.

Day 2: How to Get Insurance Leads on Facebook (Without Paying for Ads)

David and Elle Denning joined Alex to break down the social media and content systems that actually bring insurance agents new business — without ad spend, without going viral, and without spending hours online every day.

The key takeaway: consistent, authentic content creates trust with your existing network. Most agents’ next 10 clients already follow them — they just haven’t been given a reason to reach out yet.

The session covered what to post, when to post, and how to use Agent CRM’s Social Planner to make showing up consistently manageable.

Day 3: Build a Lead System You Own (Not Rent)

Shauna Thoresen, founder of Social Waves Media, joined Alex for Day 3 to tackle the most dangerous trap in insurance marketing: building your entire business on platforms and lead sources you don’t control.

Paid lead vendors can raise prices or disappear. Facebook ads can get restricted. An algorithm change can wipe out your organic reach.

Shauna walked agents through how to build a lead generation system anchored in assets they actually own — an email list, a CRM database, a consistent content library — so no single platform change can derail their pipeline.

Day 4: Stop Losing the Clients You Already Have

Alex Branning returned for Day 4 to address what he called “the trap” — the habit most agents fall into of spending 80–90% of their energy chasing new leads while their most valuable asset sits neglected: their existing book of business.

An existing client who feels forgotten is a referral opportunity you’re not capturing. A renewal that slips without a check-in is an exit you didn’t try to prevent.

Day 4 covered practical retention strategies: the check-in touchpoint sequence, how to use Agent CRM to automate relationship maintenance, and how to turn renewals from administrative tasks into relationship moments.

Day 5: Turn Happy Clients Into Referrals on Autopilot

Alex closed out the challenge with what he called the most underutilized growth strategy in insurance: a structured referral system.

Most agents rely on passive referrals — hoping that satisfied clients mention them to a friend sometime. Day 5 showed how to make referrals active, consistent, and predictable by asking the right way, at the right moment, and following up with a system that doesn’t depend on anyone’s memory.

The session ended with agents leaving with a referral process they could start using the same week.

The Framework Behind It All: The Insurance Playground

The five-day challenge was built on the ideas in Alex Branning’s book, The Insurance Playground — a marketing framework designed specifically for insurance agents who want to grow their business without burning out.

The book covers the same three pillars the challenge was built around:

  • Attract: Build a system that brings ideal clients to you
  • Keep: Retain clients with proactive relationship management
  • Multiply: Turn your happy clients into your best source of new business

The Insurance Playground is available here. If the challenge sessions resonated with you, the book goes deeper on every concept with a step-by-step framework you can apply to your specific business.
